What It Is

What Is Cold Laser Therapy?

Therapeutic low-level laser therapy, often called cold laser, applies low-level light energy to the tissue around an injured or painful area. It is called "cold" laser because it does not produce heat, unlike the surgical lasers people usually picture.

The light is absorbed by the tissue, and research suggests this may support the body's own repair processes at a cellular level. The therapy has been studied in the management of musculoskeletal pain, and the class of device is approved by Health Canada.

How We Use It

Our Approach to Cold Laser Therapy in Burlington

We use cold laser as one part of a wider care plan rather than as a standalone treatment. Whether it suits your situation is something we work out after assessing you, and we will be straight with you about whether we think it would add anything in your case.

A session is short, usually somewhere between five and fifteen minutes depending on the area being treated. It is non-invasive and comfortable, with no heat and nothing to recover from afterwards, so you can carry on with your day.

Conditions Cold Laser Therapy May Help With

Cold laser is used most often for muscle and joint complaints, including lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, hip pain, heel pain, tennis and golfer's elbow, tendinitis, bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, sprains and strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, and both acute and longer-standing sports injuries.

How many sessions someone needs varies a good deal. A more recent or less severe problem generally needs fewer; something long-standing generally needs more. We assess each case individually and will give you a realistic sense of what to expect rather than a fixed number up front.
