What Custom Orthotics Are
Custom orthotics are foot supports made to the shape of your own feet, rather than picked off a shelf. They sit inside your footwear and are used to support how your foot contacts the ground.
Because your feet are the base you stand on, how they load can relate to what is happening further up through the knees, hips and lower back. That is why we look at them as part of a wider postural picture rather than in isolation.
How the Process Works
We start with an assessment of your feet, your stance and how you walk, alongside the postural work we would do anyway. If we think orthotics would be useful in your case, we take an impression of your feet and that is what the orthotics are built from.
Once they arrive we fit them and check how you are getting on with them. There is usually a short settling-in period while you get used to wearing them.
When They Come Up
Orthotics tend to come into the conversation when there is foot or heel pain, arch discomfort, or when a knee, hip or lower back complaint looks related to how someone is loading through their feet.
Whether they suit your situation is something we work out after assessing you, and we will be straight with you about whether we think they would add anything in your case.
