Hello everyone, Dr. Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a chiropractor in Burlington, Ontario at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line in the Beacon Hill Plaza. I have also completed posture-focused training through the American Posture Institute, and I am canfitpro-certified in personal training.
Today I want to talk about something I see in a lot of growing kids: posture.
Why Posture Matters for Growing Kids
Kids carry heavy backpacks, sit for long stretches at school, and spend more time than ever looking down at phones and tablets. Over time, those habits can shape how a young body holds itself. Rounded shoulders, a forward head position, and an uneven stance are common things parents notice.
Posture is part of musculoskeletal health, which is what chiropractic care addresses. When the spine and surrounding muscles are working comfortably, kids tend to move and sit with less strain.
What Parents Often Notice
Many parents bring their child in after spotting a few of these:
- One shoulder sitting higher than the other
- A head that drifts forward, especially over screens
- Slouching that does not ease up when you remind them to sit tall
- Complaints of a sore neck, upper back, or shoulders after school
None of these are reasons to panic. They are signals worth paying attention to while a body is still growing.
How Chiropractic Care May Help
Chiropractic care focuses on the spine, joints, and muscles. For posture concerns, that can mean gentle assessment of how a child stands and moves, hands-on care suited to their age and size, and simple guidance you can use at home.
Many families find that small changes make a real difference: a better-fitting backpack worn on both shoulders, regular movement breaks during homework, and a screen setup that keeps the head level instead of dropped down. Care is intended to support comfortable movement, and it can sit alongside whatever else your family is already doing.
Simple Posture Habits to Try at Home
Here are a few things I often suggest to parents:
- Pack the backpack light and wear it on both shoulders.
- Raise screens closer to eye level so the head stays upright.
- Build in short movement breaks during long stretches of sitting.
- Encourage outdoor play and activity, which keeps muscles strong and mobile.
