This is the time of year when I like to remind parents about the dangers of winter sports injuries because so many of our kids participate in activities such as ice-hockey, figure skating, snow-boarding, downhill skiing and tobogganing.
Falls onto the lower backand tailbone are an inherent risk with all of these activities and should never be ignored because this is one of the most important areas of the spine.[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.15.2013.winter.sports.injuries.bi-1.mp4 image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/winter.sports.injuries2.jpg width=500 height=299 /]
If this part of the spine is not maintained in its proper alignment, then conditions can develop such as lower back pain, sciatica or leg pains ( remember that there is no such thing as growing pains), spinal degenerative disease and even arthritis in the hips.
But, the biggest concern is that trauma to this area of the spine can set the stage for spinal curvature or scoliosis.
And parents; do not be fooled just because your kids do not complain of any pain. Kids fall all the time and spinal misalignments can often take 10 – 15 years before they produce any symptoms, and the only way to know for sure is to get a chiropractic check-up. Spinal health and posture is our area of expertise.
