Treating Colic in Babies

“How a Colicky Burlington Baby Finally Stopped Crying After 2 Straight Months of Screaming”

This is a story about baby T whom I 1st met when she was 10 wks & 1 day old. A beautiful little baby girl with an exceptionally healthy set of lungs. So much so that a very tired, weary, frustrated & confused young mother brought her daughter in to see me to help her stop screaming.

You see, baby T was colicky & had been screaming for 2 months straight & her mother was at her wits end. 2 months of yelling, screaming, extreme fussiness, sleepless nights & that anxiety that all conscientious parents would have – wondering what they were doing wrong. And nothing they tried worked; car rides, holding, rocking, walking, stroller rides or nursing. She just kept on fussing & screaming for hours on end.

Nothing, I mean NOTHING would stop her until she would finally fall asleep due to sheer exhaustion, but often times she would be up all night because she ended up sleeping during the day & this is what took it’s greatest toll on the rest of their young family.

They took baby T to the family doc for help but were told their baby was healthy & this would soon pass. But hour after hour & night after night the crying would go on & on until one day she screamed straight thru from 2pm until midnight. 10 hrs straight.

That was it.

Baby T’s mother had had enough & decided to take her to a Burlington chiropractor for a check-up. She had learned from a friend that a chiropractor had helped her baby with colic, so she decided to give it a try. That’s where I come into this story.
I met with baby T & her mom & she filled me in on the whole story. I explained to her that there is no known definite cause for colic. It is defined as “periods of crying, apparent abdominal pain & irritability” in an otherwise normal, healthy baby. And this was baby T to a tee.

I could tell by looking at her and examining her that she was tense & stressed & not at all comfortable. I told her mom that I have had very good results treating colicky babies whether newborns or a few months old ( this is the typical age range for colic to strike ) & her mom immediately asked what I expected her to ask…. How?

I explained to her that from the chiropractic perspective, the birth process can be very traumatic for the baby ( not to mention the mother ). Especially if labour is long, difficult, induced & especially if forceps or the vacuum suction is used to assist the delivery process.

This can upset a little spine. And just like with an adult, if your spine is not healthy & aligned properly, this can lead to a multitude of conditions & health problems.

What I told baby T’s mom made sense to her, & she asked me when we could get started. I said right now & she agreed enthusiastically.

I proceeded to gently treat baby T every couple of days & after about 2 wks, her mom finally started to notice a significant change.

First, the late night crying had subsided. The rest of the family was very happy as now everyone could sleep peacefully.

Then the evening screaming sessions started to lessen & they were not as long & drawn out. And when she did scream & cry, it was not as long & often. Baby T’s mom was committed to keeping her appointments & noticed continual & steady improvement week after week until one day, baby T did not cry at all.

She finally had a happy, comfortable day for the whole day as a new baby should. Mom was ecstatic, relieved & very thankful as were the rest of the family.

By the time baby T was 8 months old , she was colic-free. An occasional scream if she was hungry, wanted attention or couldn’t reach her toy but that was it. She was a normal, healthy baby once again & her mom told me she couldn’t imagine what they might have gone through if they didn’t bring their precious little daughter to the chiropractor. I told her I was glad that I was able to help.

Lower Back Pain Story

“How A Lower Back Pain Sufferer Started Golfing Again at 70 Yrs Of Age!”

This is a story of a gentleman who barely walked into our office because he was suffering from extreme lower back pain.

His back had ‘gone out’ & he had been bed-ridden for at least 3 weeks before he made it into the office to see me. When it first happened , he went to see his family doc.His family doc told him he had a problem with his sacro-iliac joint and prescribed him some medication.

And that’s what MD’s do is to recommend / prescribe medication. But believe me, in all my 25 yrs of practice I cannot recall someone having a health problem because they were NOT taking drugs.

Getting back to this story, this patient did not get better. So he was prescribed a different, stronger drug & another & another because nothing was working. He was still in excruciating pain & could not get out of bed even to use the washroom. The family doc then arranged for a nurse to come into his home to inject him with Demerol & this made him so sick & nauseated that he said “forget it!”.

He decided to try something else.

He remembered one of his friends had a bad back & called her to get the name of her chiropractor. He knew that her back got a lot better after visiting a Burlington chiropractor and that’s where I come into this story.

This poor man barely, & I mean barely walked into my office. It took every ounce of his energy to keep a straight face & keep himself from shedding tears of pain. He could not even sit down during the consultation. He needed to stand up & lean against the wall for support.

So I asked him what happened.

He told me he just bent over to put on his socks one morning, something clicked in his lower spine & he could not get up. The pain progressed to the point where he could not move or stand. I asked him what the family doc recommended & he told me he was instructed to take pain-killers & put heat on his back.

YIKES! – I said to myself. Putting heat on something that is already inflamed & painful is the WORST thing you can do!  Heat just caused the inflammation to increase & his pain level went thru the roof !!

I immediately got him down on the exam table & put an ice pack on his back for 30 min. This offered him enough relief that I was able to examine him & his family doc was right . He did have a mis-aligned sacro-iliac joint. But drugs & heat was totally the wrong way to treat this.

The joint needed to be re-aligned. And I told this patient also that it wasn’t bending over to put his socks on that caused the problem. I asked him if he was taking care of his spinal hygiene like he was his dental hygiene. Like most others, he said “no”.

I told  him that it wasn’t his fault that no-one told him that he should be taking care of one of the most important parts of his anatomy & that I would do the best I could to help him.

I gently re-aligned his sacro-iliac joint & told him to go home & lie down with knees bent & apply ice to his back instead of heat. We followed this same procedure several times over the next 2 wks at which time he was able to walk quite comfortably on his own.

He took no more medication & was very thankful for that too because not only did it not work, but it caused him to become severely constipated which did not do his lower spine any favors either. ( the lower back nerves & the lower intestines are directly connected ).

I will never forget the day about 2 months after I first met him when he came bouncing into my office with a huge smile on his face.

I asked him what’s up & he told me he just shot a 91. I said I didn’t realize he was a golfer & he told me he hadn’t golfed for 20 yrs because of his back. But he was feeling so much better that he decided to give it a try and now he was golfing better than ever!

This patient has continued maintenance treatments with me faithfully over the past 15 yrs & still plays golf regularly at 85 yrs of age !

You see, it is an absolute must that you keep a healthy, flexible properly aligned spine for your whole life because as you age, your spine can be you greatest asset or your greatest liability.
