Chiropractic and your Good Golf Game

Chiropractic and your Good Golf Game

Spring time is when many amateur golfers pull out the clubs and polish them up for another season. Golf can be frustrating enough as a pastime without adding other issues such as backache, sciatica or hip, knee and foot issues.

Many of my practice members over the years have remarked on how regular chiropractic care helps to improve their golf game, prevent those nagging injuries, reduce their down-time and increase stamina.

Typical golfing injuries

  • tenderness and inflammation of the inner forearm
  • lower back ache from spinal joint irritation
  • lower back ache from bulging disc and nerve root irritation
  • hip joint irritation
  • knee, ankle and foot problems

Mechanism of Injury

Golf is an extreme sport in the sense that the body goes through extreme movements. Gripping the club and striking the ball repetitively stresses the forearms. The twist and torquing of the lower back however is the greatest area of repetitive stress when driving the ball. Depending on pelvic and lumbar spine alignment, a multitude of problems can result. The lumbar spine, pelvis (sacroiliac joints) and hip joints (which attach to the pelvis) are all connected and codependent. A problem in one area can cause a multitude of problems throughout the entire kinetic chain (lumbar spine to foot).

How does chiropractic care help?

Chiropractic adjustments for the golfer focuses on the lower back and pelvis. Specific adjustments to balance the pelvis left and right and to correct any twist or torque in the pelvis are critical. These two postural distortions result from prolonged sitting. Most golfing injuries happen in people who sit at their job all day and then engage in this extreme sport on evenings or weekends. The muscle system adapts to your structural alignment. Every degree of postural distortion causes tense and weak muscles in the lower back, pelvis and legs. These two issues together increase the risk of injury.

Your next step

Having a proper evaluation of your entire posture system is where to start. This will identify any posture distortions in the lower back and pelvis, deteriorating spinal discs, degenerative changes in the hip joints and imbalances in the supporting muscles. This would include the following; a detailed posture scan, orthopedic and neurological tests, and most likely some spinal/postural xrays. And then we can formulate a specific treatment plan. And yes, you will be required to do some exercises at home; pre- and post-golf sessions as well. I will help you with these of course but everyone has to take some responsibility for their own health. My job is to educate, align your spine, support and coach you throughout the process. Most professional golfers are under regular chiropractic care and if it is good enough for them, it is good enough for you as well.

Spine Friendly Sleeping

“Proper Sleeping Posture For Your Back”

Spine Friendly Sleeping Posture Burlington

Last week we learned about why it is never a good idea to sleep on your stomach and as promised, today you are going to learn about spine-friendly sleeping.

The best position to sleep in by far is on your back. And if you are using a contour pillow to support the proper curve in your neck and a pillow or two propped up underneath your knees, this will ensure your spine is in the best possible posture while you’re sleeping.

Now, if you do not like sleeping on your back for some reason, your second best choice is to sleep on your side. And here is what you need to know about side-sleeping:

1. Always sleep on the side that is most comfortable for you.
2. Make sure your pillow is not too thick or too thin. The right sized pillow will keep your head and neck straight, and perpendicular to your shoulders.
3. Never sleep with your arms above shoulder level.
4. Bring your knees up a little bit almost into the fetal position. This will prevent you from rolling forwards and twisting or torquing your lower back.
5. It is always a good idea to put a small pillow between your knees especially if you have osteoarthritis in your hips.

So, back-sleeping is your first and best choice and side-sleeping is your second best choice.

Next time we are going to continue this discussion as it pertains to infants and newborns so if you have a newborn in your household or you are expecting one, you will want to check in again next week.

In the meantime if you have any immediate questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or anyone in your family may have, please give me a call.

Chiropractic And Heart Health

Chiropractic Care And
Heart Health

This is a case history of a 65 yo male who came to me with concerns about his neck posture (forward head posture and upper back humping) and he was also having some heart health issues.

Regarding his heart, he was on medication because when the left ventricle contracted it would only eject 27% of the volume of blood contained within the chamber. This was borderline severe heart failure because normal for men is between 52 and 72%; slightly higher for females.

We agreed on a chiropractic care plan to correct the forward head posture and the upper back humping. It is important to understand that the upper thoracic spine is where a lot of the nerves originate that supply the heart muscle.

Hyper-kyphosis or humping in this region can compress these nerves altering heart function.

It was around 8 months after starting care that this patient shared the joyous news that the most recent check-up with his cardiologist revealed his heart was now functioning at the 52% mark (low end of normal) and he could now start to reduce his medication. He did not like the way they made him feel.

He profusely thanked me for healing his heart but this is where we had to change the languaging a bit.

I explained to him that I did not “heal” his heart. His body healed itself; all I did was turn on the switch.

The takeaway here is that the human body is a self-regulating and self-healing organism provided there is minimal or no nerve interference.Miracles can happen and do happen every single day with chiropractic adjustments.

Cervical Subluxation

High Blood Pressure
And Neck Pain

Misalignment of the 1st or 2nd vertebrae right at the top of your neck (upper cervical subluxation) can cause disturbance of the most important part of your nerve system called the brain stem.
The brain stem is responsible for many life-sustaining functions such as respiration, coordination, blood pressure and heart rate just to name a few.
Most of us do have misalignments here but how would you know if you do?

Heart Health Benefits

Chiropractic May Benefit Your Heart Health

February is Heart Month here at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line in Burlington, Ontario.

And not because it’s Valentines but because of the potential benefits chiropractic care has on your heart health.

Because a lot of you are not aware of this, today I will share with you 5 ways chiropractic adjustments may improve your heart health.

1. Adjustments improve the nerve supply to your heart muscle. And you want all your organs to receive a full, healthy and rich nerve supply so that they work properly including your heart.

2. Many patients report that they have fewer heart palpitations after starting chiropractic care which is a good thing because as you know, palpitations (atrial fibrillation) can be a precursor to strokes and heart attacks.

3. Adjustments can possible reduce the inflammatory response in the vessels surrounding the heart.

4. It has been shown that chiropractic adjustments improve lung capacity. And the more oxygen you take in with each breath, the less stress there is on the heart.

5. It has also been shown that many patients under regular chiropractic care have lower blood pressure.

There you have it!

So, if you or anyone in your family have a rapid heart rate, or palpitations or high blood pressure and you want to find out more how we may be able to help, why don’t you schedule an appointment for a complimentary initial consultation.

Dementia And Posture

Dementia's Link To Posture

The World Health Organization states that 55 million people worldwide are currently suffering from dementia.

And not only that, they predict that this number will double every single year for the next year.

Posture has significantly declined during this digital age across all age groups.

In fact, pediatric posture is now frequently mimicking the posture of elderly people who suffer from dementia; that slouched over, humped back, forward head posture presentation that we have talked about many times before.

Recent research on posture shows that forward head posture restricts blood flow to the brain thus affecting the most fragile of cognitive functions including academic performance.

If you have children, have you noticed that they may have a foggy brain on occasion?

And/or are they not performing academically as well as they should be?

As a Certified Posture Expert, I may be able to help.Your first step would be to give us a call and schedule an appointment for a free initial consultation which also includes a detailed posture check.

Then I can show you for sure if there is connection between the two.

The phone number to call is 905 335 LIFE (5433).Or you can click the on the link (www.mobilefd) to schedule an appointment online at your convenience.

A shift in mere centimeters of head posture can have a profound impact on the trajectory of your child’s life!

Opioid Dependency

Children's Headaches From Forward Head Posture

Among many other health issues, stress is famous for causing headaches, neck pain and lower back pain.

The unfortunate thing, however, is that many people have been told that painkillers are the only solution to these problems.

But what is even more unfortunate is that when the over-the-counter painkillers stop working, many of these people are prescribed opioids.

It has been very well documented that opioids are highly addictive, and can have fatal consequences when used in excess.

The good news, however, is that there is a safe and natural solution.

It has also been well documented that people who get regular chiropractic adjustments to maintain good spinal alignment and a strong, healthy posture system are much less likely to use painkillers including opioids.

So if you or anyone in your family are relying too much on a pill bottle for any type of pain relief, I may be able to help.

Your first step will be to contact our office to schedule an initial consultation. These are complimentary. We can do these over the phone if you wish and, of course, right here in the office.

This will give us a good idea if you have a chiropractic case.

If you are ready to see me right away, you can click on this link www.mobilefd.ca/d/8880 to schedule an appointment for your initial consultation at your convenience.

Mom Back And Leg Pain

Moms' Suffering From Lower Back Pain And Leg Pain

You have 2 or 3 kids on the go; prepping meals, summer camps, laundry etc. and at the end of the day when you want to get out for a walk and decompress a bit, your back is too tired and achy.

You may also find yourself waking up during the night with a nasty cramp in your hamstring, calf, foot or toes.

And you may feel the lingering effects of the cramp for a day or 2 afterwards.

And then you may start to feel episodes of pain, numbness, burning and tingling down into your legs and feet.

Does this sound familiar?

If yes, read on till the end!Back pain and leg pain (sciatica) can be a very frustrating thing to deal with because it can take you right off of your game and significantly impair your activities of daily living.

Now is there anything you can do about this?

My first and best recommendation has always been to take the appropriate measures to minimize the chances of this happening in the first place.

This would be regular chiropractic check-ups to make sure that your spine is in good alignment and your posture system is strong and healthy.

When your posture system is strong and healthy, these types of problems are much less likely to happen.

But what if you weren’t being proactive with your spinal health?

I have 2 suggestions for you then;

One is to give us a phone call and we will send you some information on chiropractic and the connection between lower back pain and sciatica. I will also include some tips for home care.

Or, if you are ready to take action right now, when you call us mention that you saw this post and we will give you 40% off of your initial examination fees.Consultations are always complimentary.

In other words there is no charge to sit down and talk with me to determine if you have a chiropractic case.

And if we both agree that you do, the choice is up to you whether you want to proceed with the initial examination.905 335 LIFE (5433) is the number to call here in Burlington, Ontario.
