Today and over the next few weeks, we review some of the most significant research breakthroughs of the past decade that support chiropractic care.

This particular study measured 6 health parameters of patients who participated in an 18 week chiropractic wellness program.

These patients received regular chiropractic adjustments for the management of spinal misalignments and postural distortions irrespective of neuromusculoskeletal pain syndromes.

In other words, they received regular chiropractic adjustments whether they were having pain issues or not, and they were also coached on diet, exercise and nutrition.

This study was based upon the contention that spinal misalignments and postural distortions may compromise the integrity of the nerve system, internal organ function and your general health and well-being.

And, here are the results.

The 18 week wellness protocol was shown to improve weight, blood pressure, heart rate, strength, body-mass index (muscle vs fat ratio) and forced vital capacity.

The latter is a measurement of lung function.

So, once again the research demonstrates that the biggest benefit of regular chiropractic care is to optimize your health, wellness and vitality!

First of all, I would like you to imagine what your posture would look like if you got some really good news.

That job promotion you worked so hard for or you just won 1000$ on a scratch ticket.

You would be happy and excited, you would get up out of your chair and do a fist pump.

You may even jump for joy with your arms up over your head in celebration.

This type of posture is referred to as an upright and open posture.

An upright and open posture causes your body to release your feel good and self-confidence and power hormones.
Now, what would your posture look like if you just got some really sad news?

Typically, your head is down and your shoulders are rounded forwards and you may have your arms crossed in front of your body.

This type of posture is referred to as a closed posture. A closed posture causes your body to release those hormones which cause sadness, low self-esteem and depression.

This is what I would like you to consider. If you have subluxations and posture distortions the are causing you to have forward head posture, shoulders that are slumping forwards and humping of the upper back which is moving towards a closed posture, what type of hormones are continuously being released into your body on a daily basis?

Your feel-good, self-confident, power hormones or your sad, low self-esteem and depression hormones?

And for all you ladies, did you know that if you sit for more than 7 hours per day, you are 4 times more likely to be depressed?

So, once again we can see that good and healthy posture is far more important than just helping to minimize your aches and pains.

If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your children may have, please call me.

Posture Screen Instructions

“Here’s How To Perform A Basic At Home Posture Screen On Your Kids
At Home Posture Screening Process Burlington

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is founder and owner of Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and a Certified Posture Expert (CPE) with the American Posture Institute.

Life Chiropractic is a family chiropractic and postural correction facility.

Today we learn how to do a basic at-home posture screen for your children.

This posture screen will work best on kids 6 years of age or older. Posture screens can be done on younger kids, but must be done by a CPE. This screening technique is to identify posture distortions only which would need further investigation by a CPE.

Have you child stand comfortably in bare feet (shoulder width apart) and they should be wearing an under-shirt (or a bare back) and shorts. This way you can get a real good look at what is going on.

First, you want to observe them from behind. Their head should be aligned perfectly on top of their neck. It should not be turned or tilted to one side or the other.

Next, place your hands on top of their shoulders. Your hands should be level. One hand should not be higher or lower than the other.

Now slide your hands down to their waist-line and find the top of their hip bones. Place your hands here and again they should be level. One hand should not be higher or lower than the other. Now you want to look at their Achilles tendon. This is the tendon about the size of a pencil that runs from the bottom of their calf and attaches into their heel bone. This tendon should be straight up and down and should not be bent to the inside or outside. You may see this on one foot or both feet.

Now, turn them 90 degrees and observe their posture from the side. It does not matter which. These 2 posture checks are very important. The middle point of their ear ( the opening) should be aligned perfectly over the centre point of their shoulder muscle. The ear should not be aligned in front of the shoulders.

And finally, look at their shoulder blades. The shoulder blades should lie flat against their rib-cage and should not be pointy or winging out.

If you have identified even one ‘should not’, your child needs to have a thorough postural examination by a CPE and this is where I can help you. All you have to do is call me and schedule and appointment for your free initial consultation which includes a posture check.

Remember that we also offer family appointments where we can check all of your children at the same time.

Good Posture Hygiene

Good Posture Hygiene for Kids Burlignton

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is founder and owner of Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute.

Life Chiropractic is a family chiropractic and postural correction facility.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/09.27.2016.good.posture.hygiene.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/good.posture.hygiene.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

Today we learn about good posture hygiene for your children.

So, what is good posture hygiene? Good posture hygiene means that your child’s spine is in proper alignment, it is balanced from side to side and your child
exhibits good control of their core musculature.

Here is how to ensure your kids have good posture hygiene …

First of all, every child should have a thorough posture exam by a certified posture expert by the time they are 6 years old at the very latest. This exam will
also serve as a benchmark for future posture exams.

Children should then undergo a complete posture analysis every year thereafter to check for posture distortions and signs of scoliosis (spinal curve).

Children in school should take adequate posture breaks from sitting at their desk and stand up and stretch their spine. This will also help them stay focused
on their school-work.

You can also teach your kids the postural ABC’s which will help them remember the components of good posture while they are sitting, lifting, texting etc.

And remember backpack safety; their backpack should not exceed 10% of their body weight and should be worn evenly over both shoulders.

You can also limit the time they spend sitting at the TV or computer or playing video games.

Outdoor activities are far better for the body and mind both.

And finally, lead by example. Keep your posture in check by having good posture yourself.

Next time you are going to learn how to do an at-home posture exam of your kids.

In the meantime if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your kids may have, please give me a call.

Remember that consultations and posture checks are always free of charge and we do also offer family appointments.

Today we continue to learn about posture and children.

One thing we need to review is what does good posture look like?

Good posture, when standing, means the head is aligned over the shoulders and the shoulders are aligned over the hips and the weight is equally distributed over both hips and feet.

The shoulders are level and the hips are level. Remember that posture is either good or bad. There is no in-between.

Children begin to learn postural habits that will shape their lives at a very young age.

Attending school especially introduces them to a new environment and they will develop habits that will stay with them for many years.

Common postural faults with kids start to develop as early as 6 years of age and these are the things that you especially need to be aware of;
– Improperly wearing heavy backpacks to school every day.
– Sitting at their school desk for prolonged periods without adequate posture breaks.
– Slumping their head and shoulders forwards and rounding their upper back while reading or doing homework.
– Sitting in front of the TV or computer or playing video games or texting with a slumped posture.

Remember that in our last post we discussed proper sitting technique and backpack safety, and next time we are going to learn about postural hygiene for kids.

In the meantime, if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your kids may have, please call me.

I am here to help. Remember that consultations and posture checks are always free of charge and we also offer family appointments.

Healthy Posture At School

“How Kids Can Maintain
Healthy Posture At School”

Maintaining Healthy Kids Posture At School Burlington

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is founder and owner of Life Chiropractic Centre which is a family chiropractic facility.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and an API Certified Posture Expert.

Today we review a couple of things about your children and their posture in school as it is the beginning of another school year.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/09.16.2016.how.school.affects.your.childrens.posture.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/kids.posture.at_.school.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

The first thing you want to do is teach them or remind them how to sit properly. Remember all the things we talked about regarding ‘sitting’ and how sitting is now considered the new smoking.

To sit properly means the head is pulled back over the shoulders, the shoulders are pulled back over the hips and both feet are flat on the floor.

This will ensure the spine maintains its proper S-curve instead of collapsing into the deadly C-curve where the head is held out if front of the shoulders, the shoulders are rounding forwards and the upper back is humping.

Also, the weight of their backpack should not exceed 10% of their body weight.

For example, if your child weighs 120 pounds then their backpack should not weigh more than 12 pounds. And the heaviest items should be placed in first so they lie closest to the spine. The backpack should also be centered over both shoulders and not hanging to the side off of one shoulder. Hanging off of one shoulder will put a stress on the spine that could cause a spinal curve or scoliosis.

If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your children may have, please call me. Remember that consultations and posture checks are always free of charge and family appointments are also available.

How Sitting Affects Kids

“Here’s How Sitting Can Negatively Impact Your Kids Health”

Sittings Impact On Kids Health Burlington

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is owner and founder of Life Chiropractic Centre which is a family chiropractic facility.

He is also a canfitpro Certified Personal Training Specialist and is a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute.

Today we learn about how sitting is affecting your children.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/08.29.2016.how.sitting.effects.children.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/sitting.impact.on_.kids_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

The effects of poor posture are not just affecting adults, but children as well.

Currently, 65% of school-aged children present with some type of back pain due to postural distortion patterns.

One study showed that children as young as 10 years old are demonstrating visible signs of spinal degeneration (spinal arthritis) on xray.

Another study of 439 thirteen year olds; one-third of the children who participated in the study presented with lower back disc herniation (protrusion) on MRI.

The only reason a spine will degenerate or become arthritic, and the only reason spinal discs begin to herniate is due to pre-existing posture distortion patterns.

Sitting with postural collapse or weak posture is causing postural decline in children.

Consider the Trousler study of 1994; 41.6% of school-aged kids have lower back pain while sitting in class. Thirty percent within 1 hour of sitting and 70% after sitting for an hour or more.

So it is no surprise that kids with poor posture develop into adults with even worse posture and sickly health conditions.

And these things are exactly why you need to take care of our offer and make an appointment for a free initial consultation and free posture check for your children.

Remember we also offer family appointments where we can check every member of your family at the same time.

3 Things To Know About Sitting

“3 Things You Need To Know About Sitting”

3 things you need to know about sitting Burlington

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is owner and founder of Life Chiropractic Centre which is a family chiropractic facility.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute.

Today we continue to learn about the ill-effects of sitting.

And here are 3 more things you need to know about sitting.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/08.23.2016.three.effects.sitting.has.on.your.spine.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/3.effects.sitting.has_.on_.yourspine.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

When you are in a seated position, the pressure on your lower back (lumbar spine) increases to 1.7 times your body weight.

For example, a 200 pound person when sitting would actually have 340 pounds of pressure on their lower back.

And this would be sitting with proper posture which most people do not do. Otherwise, this pressure would be even more with improper sitting posture.

Also, your spine can only tolerate a slouched posture for about 20 minutes before the spinal discs begin to absorb the excess pressure.

And it is this excess pressure that causes your spinal discs to collapse or decay.

And finally, recent studies on sitting now show that prolonged sitting may not be reversible even with exercise.

For example, 1 hour of exercise will not off-set the effects of a standard 8 hour sitting day.

More on this topic again next time, but in the meantime if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your children may have, please call me.

Remember that consultations and posture checks are always free of charge and family appointments are also available.

Sitting Is The New Smoking

“How Is Sitting Making You Sick?”

How Is Sitting Making You Sick Burlington

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor and is owner and founder of Life Chiropractic Centre which is a family chiropractic facility.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute.

Today’s health topic is how sitting is making you sick.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/08.16.2016.smoking.is.new.sitting.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sitting.is_.new_.smoking.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

With the advancement of modern technology – computers, video games, cell phones – human beings are much more sedentary and as a consequence are sitting way more than they should.

Recent studies are revealing some very disturbing facts about how sitting is affecting our health.

Prolonged sitting stops your joints from moving, stops your muscles from firing and slows down your heart rate.

Your body’s calorie-burning rate drops to 1 calorie per minute which is one third of what it would be of you were walking.

Your insulin sensitivity decreases which increases the chances of developing type II diabetes.

Your fat and cholesterol levels rise also. So, it is also no surprise that obesity is becoming an epidemic problem in our country; not just in adults but children as well.

There is more information that you need to know about sitting which we will cover next time, but in the meantime if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns that you may have or your children may have, please give me a call.

Remember that consultations and posture checks in our office are always free of charge and family appointments are always available.

The reason we offer family appointments is because spinal problems and posture distortion patterns tend to run in families.

How To Check Your Shoulders

“Here’s How To Check Yourself And
Your Children For Potential
Shoulder Problems”

Detecting Should Problems

Dr Brad Ivanchuk is a Burlington chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre which is a family chiropractic facility.

He is also a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist and a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute.

Today’s health topic is how to check yourself and your children for potential shoulder problems.

[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/08.09.2016.predicting.future.shoulder.problems.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/detecting.shoulder.problems.jpg width=500 height=305 /]

Your shoulder joints are one of the most frequently used joints in your body.

And they are also the most unstable joint in your body.

Recall what we learned last time that a lot of the time, you can have shoulder problems without feeling any pain.

Here are the signs you would look for to determine if you or any of your children are headed for future shoulder problems; shoulders that are rounded forwards, humping of the upper back, forward head posture, one shoulder is higher than the other, shoulder blades that stick out instead of lying flat against the rib cage, upper chest breathing instead of diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing, and un-even shoulder flexibility.

Symptoms that would indicate future shoulder problems would be numbness, tingling and diffuse pain in the wrists and hands when carrying something, lifting something and any over-head activities.

If you or any of your children have any of these signs or symptoms, you need to get in to see me right away.

The sooner we can correct the problem the better.

Remember that consultations and posture checks in our office are always free of charge.

Family appointments are also available where we can check your whole family at the same time.

And the reason for this is because spinal problems do tend to run in families.

Our phone number here is Burlington is 905 335 LIFE (5433) or you can email me by clicking directly on the link on our home page.
