Last time we learned about what can cause an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism which is the most common thyroid problem.
And as promised, today you are going to learn what measures you can take to improve and maintain a lifetime of healthy thyroid function not just for you, but for every member of your family.
Recall that a subluxation or postural distortion at the C7 level in your spine will compress the nerve that supplies the thyroid gland causing it to slow down (underactive).
Well, the complete opposite is true when you get a chiropractic adjustment at the C7 level.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/03.01.2016.%20Improve.maintain.thyroid.functions.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/htiptf.png width=430 height=250 /]The adjustment will relieve the nerve pressure restoring a free and full nerve supply to the thyroid gland stimulating it to work at full capacity.
It is as simple as that.
The only way of course to know for sure if you have a subluxation or postural distortion at the C7 level is to get a chiropractic examination.
From a nutritional aspect, iodine (sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, kelp, kombu, wakame, scallops, shrimp, yogurt ), Vitamin D (supplement during winter months, also found in wild salmon), copper, iron and zinc (all 3 of these found in sesame seeds) and selenium
(Brazil nuts) all support healthy thyroid function.
And for all you hard-core athletes out there, remember there are 3 exercises that can decrease your thyroid function by up to 28%!
So keep an eye out for the signs and symptoms which we covered in detail a few weeks ago.
The 3 exercises are running/spin classes, heavy weight lifting and Crossfit or any high intensity exercise.

Last time we started talking about thyroid problems and how chiropractic care can help.
And as promised, today you are going to learn what can cause an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism which is the most common thyroid problem.
This information is something every single person needs to know considering the importance of the thyroid gland as it pertains to your health and the fact that hypothyroidism is becoming such a big problem in our society.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/02.23.2016.%20under.active.thyroid.bi.hb1.mp4 image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/02.23.2016.under_.active.thyroid.jpg width=500 height=305 /]
The first thing you need to do is look at the Chart of Effects of Spinal Misalignments found right on our home page.
Notice how the nerve from the C7 level near the top of the spine control your thyroid gland.
When this nerve gets compressed by a subluxation or postural distortion at this level, it will impair the function of your thyroid gland.
In most cases slowing it down (underactive).
The question is … what causes subluxations and postural distortions in this part of your spine? And the answer is neck injuries.
Neck injuries from contact sports, concussive head traumas and whiplash car accidents.
In fact, Dr Arthur Croft who is the director of the Spine Research Institute of San Diego says that these types of traumas definitely cause thyroid problems.
Now you may argue that your thyroid is not at risk because you have never suffered this type of neck injury, but the stresses of everyday life – talking on your phone, sitting at your computer, texting on your cell phone – all cause spinal nerve compression in the very same area!
Next time we are going to discuss exactly what it is you can do to make sure you and every member of your family maintain proper and healthy thyroid function for a life-time.
In the meantime, if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or anyone in your family may have, please give me a call.
Remember that consultations are always free of charge, we also offer family appointments and our phone number is 905 335 LIFE (5433).

If you are having any type of thyroid issue, please read this carefully because over the next few weeks we are going to discuss thyroid problems and how chiropractic care can help.
But before we begin, let’s set the stage because the numbers are staggering and these statistics once again confirm the sad and declining state of health in our society.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/02.02.2016.%20Thyroid.problems.bi-1.mp4 image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/thyroid.problems.jpg width=500 height=305 /]It is estimated that 10% of all Canadians have some sort of thyroid problem and as many as 50% of these remain undiagnosed.
This means the person does not even know they have a thyroid problem.
Thyroid health affects all aspects of one’s well-being, both genders and at all ages.
It is a small butterfly shaped gland in the front of you neck and the hormones it secretes are essential for all phases of growth and your metabolism.
The most common type of thyroid problem is an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism.
Here are the signs and symptoms of an underactive thyroid; poor appetite, intolerance to cold, dry skin, brittle hair, constipation, muscular weakness, poor memory, heart disease, lupus, infertility, diabetes and arthritis.
Popular medical treatments range from synthetic hormones to taking a thyroid extract from a pig or a cow but these remain controversial at best.
So if you think or you know that you have a thyroid problem (especially an underactive thyroid), please join us again next time when I will be discussing the causes and quite frankly, some of these are going to shock you!
If you have any immediate questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please call me. I am here to help!
Remember that consultations in our office are always free of charge and family appointments are also available.

Over the past few weeks we have discussed something called postural collapse and a specific postural distortion pattern referred to as forward head posture (FHP).
And as promised, today I am going to tell you what you absolutely need to know about FHP.
And what you absolutely need to know are the devastating consequences that FHP can have on your health all of which have been determined by scientific research.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.12.2015.forward.head.posture.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/forward.head_.posture.jpg width=500 height=305 /]FHP can cause you to have headaches (including migraines), sinus issues, visual disturbances, pain and tension in the jaw, pain and tension in the neck, shoulders and chest, carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist and hands, spinal degenerative arthritis in the neck especially, 30% reduction in lung capacity, breathing difficulties including asthma, lack of energy (fatigue), weight gain, a propensity towards developing heart disease later in life and a 114% increased risk of early death in females.
Now if this is not enough to motivate you to have your posture checked, then I do not know what would be.
But if it is, I can certainly help you.
All you need to do is call our office and schedule an appointment for a posture check-up.
It is easy to do, it’s quick (only about 5 minutes) and it’s free!
So please give us a call today.
We can check you and your whole family at the same time, especially your kids.
And the reason I strongly recommend we check your kids is because spinal problems including postural problems do tend to run in families.
Our phone number here in Burlington is 905 335 LIFE (5433).
And if you are wondering what it is that causes FHP, please check in with is again next week and find out.

Over the past few weeks we have learned about a postural distortion pattern called ‘forward head posture’ (FHP) and the negative effects it can have on your health.
According to the American Posture Institute, 60 to 90% of adults and 34% of school-aged children have this condition.
And as promised last time, today we are going to learn what causes FHP.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.22.2016.causes.of.forward.head.posture.bi.mp4 image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/causes.of_.forward.head_.posture.jpg width=500 height=305 /]There are many different causes which include falls, sporting injuries and whiplash-type car accidents.
But the 2 main silent causes (silent causes are by far the most dangerous type with any health condition) are texting on a cell phone and sitting at a computer.
It is estimated that 46% of 3rd graders and 90% of 9th graders exceed their daily 2 hour screen-time limit.
And when you add in an average of 2-4 hours of cell phone texting per day, it is no surprise how advances in modern technology have created postural declines in our society.
So what is it you can do about this?
The first and foremost thing you should do is call me to schedule an appointment for an ever-important postural check-up.
It is easy to do.
It’s quick – it only takes about 5 minutes and it’s free.
This is a community service provided by Life Chiropractic Centre.
We can actually measure your posture and tell you how much FHP you have.
Our phone number is 905 335 LIFE (5433) and remember that we can check your whole family at the same time. Especially your kids.
And why is it important to check your kids? Because good posture is by design, not by circumstance.

Last time we talked about something called postural collapse and how this can cause fatigue, lack of energy, weight gain and even obesity in some people.
And as promised, today I am going to explain to you what part of your spine and the specific posture distortion pattern that can cause these health issues.
When you have good posture, from the side view your head and neck will be vertically aligned and centered directly over your hips.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.05.2016.posture.distortion.patterns.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/postural.distortion.jpg width=500 and height=305 /]If the head and neck are positioned forwards out in front of the shoulders and/or you have humping of the upper back right at the base of the neck, this specific postural distortion pattern is referred to as forward head posture (FHP).
And FHP can cause fatigue, lack of energy, weight gain and obesity.
This was explained in our last post.
The concerning thing about FHP is that according to statistics collected by the American Posture Institute, 60 to 90% of all adults have FHP and what’s even worse, 34% of all school-aged children have FHP.
There is a lot more you need to know about regarding FHP which I am going to share with you next time, but the only way to know for sure if you have this is to get your posture checked by a posture expert.
And this is what I can help you with.
All you need to do is call our office and make an appointment.
It is easy to do, it is quick (it only takes about 5 minutes) and it’s FREE.
So please give us a call at 905 335 LIFE (5433) to schedule an appointment.
We can check you and your kids all at the same time. And please be sure to visit us again next time when I am going to give you more information that you absolutely need to know about FHP.

Today we are going to talk about your posture and how much energy you have.
But the first thing you need to understand is something called your neuromuscularskeletal (nms) system.
This system is made up of your nerves, your muscles and your skeletal system which includes your spine.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/12.14.2015.posture.and.energy.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/posture.and_.energy.jpg width=500 height=305 /]This system is what is responsible for holding you upright against the ever present force of gravity.
Next there is something called Postural Fitness.
The definition of Postural Fitness is ‘efficient and sustainable function and structure of the neuromuscularskeletal system.’
There is also something called Postural Collapse.
Postural Collapse is the opposite of Postural Fitness and is defined as ‘weak and inefficient use of the nms system.’
So, here is what you need to know about all of this.
Scientific research tells that people with Postural Collapse utilize more oxygen and they also overload and fatigue certain postural muscles.
This leads to increased energy expenditure. Increased energy expenditure causes one to become lethargic but what is even worse it increases the amount of the stress hormone cortisol released into the body.
Cortisol is responsible for increased weight gain and obesity.
Next time I am going to show you exactly what part of the spine and what type of postural distortion pattern is responsible for all of this.
In the meantime, if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please call me.
Consultations are always free of charge and family appointments are also available.

Today we are going to talk about fevers and children because there have been a lot of commercials on TV lately saying you should give your children medication when they have a fever to bring it down.
Really??
This causes me great concern and I would like to explain why.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/12.07.2015.managing.children.fevers.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/children.and_.fevers.jpg width=500 height=305 /]A fever by definition is a temporary increase in body temperature in response to a disease or an illness.
And it is an important part of the body’s defense against infection.
Most bacteria or viruses that would cause an infection or a cold or the flu thrive best at 98.6 degrees F.
So it is perfectly normal (in fact, it is a sign of proper function) if your infant or child gets a fever in response to a virus for example. And the fever is usually between 102 and 104 degrees F.
So contrary to what you may think or what you may have been told, a fever signals that there is a battle going on inside the body.
But, the fever is working for the body and not against it!!
A fever is a good thing.
It is how the body kills off any unwanted germs.
And yes they are uncomfortable and you feel lousy when you have one, but you have to let it run its course.
Only the body knows when it is the right time to turn it off.
When you take medication to bring down a fever, the unwanted germs live longer inside the body.
How can this be in the best interest of the patient?!!!
Here is the prudent way to manage a fever.
Monitor it.
If it gets stuck at 105 degrees F or higher, call your family doc right away.
Get plenty of rest. Drink plenty of fluids. Water or herbal tea is the best.
And a chiropractic adjustment is always a great way to keep the immune system super-charged.
And the absolute best thing about this plan of management for a fever, there are not 30 different possible side-effects that you risk with any fever medication!
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please call me.
Consultations are always free of charge, we also offer family appointments because spinal problems do tend to run in families and our phone number is 905 335 LIFE (5433). Or you can email me directly by clicking on the link found right on our home page.

Last time we learned about the benefits of minimizing your spinal misalignments and how they never really go away due to the ongoing effects of the 3 T’s; traumas, thoughts and toxins.
So, today I am going to bring this all together for you and explain to you how you can manage stress most effectively.
And it has been proven that stress is a major factor in all sickness and disease.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/12.01.2015.minimizing.stress-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/minimizing.stress.jpg width=500 height=305 /]Chemical stress comes from the toxins in your body and these are relatively straight forward to manage.
Eat a healthy diet. Avoid processed foods, refined foods, fatty foods, sugary foods and fast foods.
Also avoid other toxins such as drugs, alcohol, medication and tobacco.
Mental/emotional stress comes from your thoughts and what you are thinking about and dealing with whether in the workplace or at home.
And you may need to seek outside help for this so find someone you can trust to talk to at your workplace, your place of worship or seek professional counselling if you have to.
Especially if it involves the health and wellbeing of your children.
We can rarely solve these types of issues on our own.
Physical stress results from all your traumas.
Big ones, small ones and repetitive ones.
So make sure you are in good physical condition.
Get your regular exercise, minimize the amount of weight you are carrying around your waist and be absolutely sure to keep your spine in the best alignment possible.
This will ensure that you have good stamina and good strength and good endurance and good coordination which will make you less prone to injury and shorten recovery times if you are.
This is exactly why most professional and high-performance athletes get chiropractic care on a regular basis.
If it is good for them, why would it not be good for you as well?
And if you adhere to these easy to follow recommendations, it is guaranteed that your body will have the upper hand on stress instead of stress having the upper hand on your body.
I have witnessed this personally after being in practice for over 25 years.
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your anyone in your family may have, please call me! Remember that consultations are always free of charge in our office and family appointments are always available.

Today you are going to learn what it is you can do to minimize your spinal misalignments or subluxations.
And the reason I say minimize is because the fact is, they never go away completely.
Recall what we learned last time about the ongoing effects of the 3 T’s; traumas, thoughts and toxins.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/11.17.2015.minimizing.subluxations-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/minimizing.spinal.misalignments.jpg width=500 height=305 /]The chiropractic adjustment is your best defence against the damaging effects of spinal misalignments or subluxations.
And the intention of the chiropractic adjustment in its purest form is to unleash and maximize the flow of the electrical impulses that are generated in your brain and travel down the spinal cord and out the nerves to every single cell in your body.
All 37.2 trillion of them.
Those same electrical impulses that principled chiropractors refer to as your ‘vital life force’ or your ‘innate intelligence’.
So how does the chiropractic adjustment benefit you exactly?
Aside from keeping you in good posture which is also your best defence against spinal degenerative arthritis, the chiropractic adjustment ensures optimal function of every cell, tissue , gland and organ in your body.
The adjustment also ensures optimal tissue repair and tissue regeneration which takes place inside your body on a daily basis.
The adjustment also ensures optimal function of your immune system.
So the collective benefit of the chiropractic adjustment is the maximum expression of your inborn health potential.
And what person does not need or deserve this?!
And chiropractic is the only health care profession on the face of the planet that can make this happen for you!
Now, even after learning what you have learned here over the past few weeks, I know there are a whole bunch of you out there who are saying… “ this is all fine and good, it makes total sense to me, I completely understand”, BUT …“I don’t need a chiropractor right now because I am not in any pain.”
So, for those of you who have this mindset, I would like to leave you with this fact to consider.
Only 10% of your nerve tissue is sensory which means it can feel pain, pleasure, hot, cold etc.
This means that 90% of the time when you have a subluxation, you are not going to feel anything including pain.
So, if you are basing your need for chiropractic care or your level of health for that matter upon the presence or absence of pain or symptoms, this is very, very risky business!!
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please give me a call.
