This is what I would like to clarify for you today.
When you go to a chiropractor who takes their own xrays you will have to pay for them yourself.
Your extended health plan if you have one may or may not cover this expense.
You will have to check your plan.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/02.03.2015.medical.center.versus.chiropractor.xrays.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/medical.clinic.xrays_.versus.chiropractor.xrays_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]This means your new patient examination fee will be more expensive because you have to account for the cost of the xrays, but there is the convenience factor of having them done right then and there.
By the way, all chiropractors receive extensive training and are qualified to take their own xrays.
On the other hand, when you go to a medical clinic for your chiropractic xrays there are a couple of advantages.
One is OHIP will cover the cost of the xrays and you will also receive a radiology report.
This means that a medical doctor who specializes in reading xrays will look at them and then send a report (the radiology report) to your chiropractor.
In my view, this is always a good idea because you get a medical opinion of your xrays as well as a chiropractic opinion.
There is a small fee for the radiology report which is about 25$ but this is less costly than paying for a set of spinal xrays.
Always remember though the bottom line is that a good set of spinal films, whether they are taken in-office or at a medical facility make for safe and effective care for both patient and the doctor.
Life Chiropractic Centre uses the xray facility at Halton Family Health at Walkers Line and Dundas which is 5 minutes from our office.

Last week in our question – answer I explained how chiropractors can help children and even adults who suffer from ear infections.
Aside from chiropractic care there are 2 dietary considerations that are very important for you to understand.
First of all, if you have an ear infection you need to eliminate all forms of sugar form your diet.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.27.2015.ear.infections.and.diet.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ear.infections.and_.your_.diet_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]The reason why is sugar can impair the function of your immune system and sugar also feeds the germs that you are trying to get rid of.
This means no fruit, no fruit juice and no candy of any kind.
The worst thing you can do when your child is cranky with a fever, a runny nose and plugged ears is to give them candy or a lollipop to suck on.
Secondly, you also need to eliminate all creamy foods and thick fluids from their diet.
This means no milk, no chocolate milk, no cheese, no creamed cheese, no ice cream and no yogurt.
These types of food will only keep the sinuses, nose and ears goopy which will prolong colds and ear infections.
Replace with fresh cut vegetables, good old-fashioned homemade chicken noodle soup and clear fluids such as water or decaffeinated organic tea until the ears have cleared.
If you find you are pounding down the antibiotics due to recurring ear infections, you need to get checked for subluxation at C1 and C2.
And you need to check up on the diet to make sure you are not inadvertently feeding the infection.
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please give me a call.

The answer to this question is a resounding YES!
Over the past 28 years in practice, I have helped several kids of all ages and even adults who have suffered from ear infections.
And today I will explain how chiropractic can help.
First of all look at the Chart of Effects of Spinal Misalignments found right on our home page for your convenience.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.20.2015.kids.ear.infections.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/kids.ear_.infections.jpg width=500 height=305 /]You will see how the nerves from the C1 and C2 levels right at the very top of the spine control your inner ear, middle ear and sinuses.
This s a very common place for people to have a subluxation. In fact most people do. But, often times in children these specific subluxations will result in ear infections and sinus issues.
This is how it works …. adjustment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae will help the ears be more resistant to infection and help the Eustachian tubes and sinuses drain properly preventing a build-up of fluid which creates a fertile breeding ground for infections.
And the coolest thing about chiropractic treatment of ear infections is that there are no antibiotics or ear tubes involved!
Don’t let your kids suffer with the pain and risk permanent hearing damage.
We can help.

One of our viewers had the following question which I am going to answer for you today …”My family doctor said I had a slipped disc in my back. Can chiropractors help people with slipped discs?”.
The first and most important thing you need to understand is that there is no such thing as a slipped disc.
Remember that your spinal discs are made of cartilage with a small ball of jelly in the center and they are firmly attached in between each of the 24 vertebrae that make up your spine.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.13.2015.slipped.disc.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/slipped.discs_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]They do not slip or move anywhere.
This is what can happen to spinal discs.
They can swell or bulge.
They can rupture or herniate.
And they can get thin or decay which is by far the most common problem seen with spinal discs.
All of these conditions can cause spinal pain in your neck and your lower back.
They can also cause shoulder and arm pain and leg pain or sciatica.
Just imagine what your teeth would look like if you did not take care of them on a regular basis? Most people do take good care of their teeth.
But what is sadly unfortunate is that most people (90% of the Canadian population in fact) do not pay any attention to their spinal hygiene.
And this lack of attention is what will lead to spinal disc decay and even the more serious problems such as bulging and herniated discs.
It is no wonder that lower back pain is now an epidemic problem in Canada.
So always remember that chiropractic care is the only thing and the most important thing that you can do to maintain healthy spinal discs and good spinal hygiene.

One question some of you have that I would like to answer today is …”why would my chiropractor want to check my children when they are not in any pain?”.
There are a few different answers to this question but in my view the most important reason a chiropractor would want to check your kids is to detect any potential health issues that can be related to spinal misalignments or subluxations.
Some examples of such issues are pinched nerves, poor immune system function, headaches, text neck, computer neck, lower back pain, spinal degenerative arthritis and crooked posture just to list a few of the more common ones.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/01.06.2015.chiropractic.check.up.for.kids.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/chiropractic.check_.up_.for_.kids_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]Often times these issues can develop into serious health problems when they could have totally been avoided with early detection and early correction.
Not all chiropractors treat children but for those that do, this is one of the most important reasons why they would want to check your children.
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns you may have or your family may have, please give us a call.
Remember that consultations are always free of charge in our office and family appointments are always available.

AUTO INSURANCE CLAIM CHANGES
DECEMBER 1st, 2014
As of Dec 1st, 2014 the way you claim for personal injury on your automobile insurance changes.
This is what you need to know …
If you have been injured in an automobile accident, you are entitled to 3500$ in treatment to rehabilitate your injuries.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/12.09.2014.auto.insurance.for.chiropractic.care.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/changes.in_.auto_.insurance.claims.jpg width=500 height=305 /]As of Dec. 1st of this year, the service provider (your chiropractor for example) must be registered with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) in order to bill your insurance company directly for the cost of the treatments.
If the service provider is not registered with the FSCO, this means that you will have to pay the service provider out of your own pocket for the care that you receive, and then submit the statements and proof of payment receipts to your insurance company in order to have them pay you back.
The way the current Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule is structured, your initial payment to the service provider could be as much as 1800$!
If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident or have suffered personal injury of any kind, you have already been hurt once.
Don’t let this financial stress cause you additional pain and suffering when your only worry should be to get well.
Choose a service provider that is licensed and registered with the FSCO.
Life Chiropractic Centre is a licensed FSCO facility. And we have over 25 years of experience helping personal injury and whiplash victims.

One question that some of you have is…. “why should I go to a chiropractor when I can go to a massage therapist or a physiotherapist.
Don’t they do the same thing?” Well, the answer to this question is an emphatic “no”.
They are 3 separate and distinct practises each unto themselves and this is what I would like to clarify for you today.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/12.02.2014.massage.physio.chiropractic.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/massage.physio.chiro_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]Massage therapy deals primarily with your muscles. It is a hands-on technique to physically relax your muscles and improve circulation.
Various types of massage exist.
Some are deep-tissue and more therapeutic, and others are lighter and more of a relaxing type experience.
The deep-tissue massage also helps to soften any scar tissue in your muscles from previous injuries.
Physiotherapy deals mostly with acute injuries such as sprained ankles and knees as well as chronically arthritic joints such as shoulders and knees.
Physiotherapy employs different types of electrical stimulation and range of motion exercises to help reduce pain and improve mobility in the affected joints.
Some also treat people with neck issues and back issues in the same fashion.
Chiropractic focuses on re-aligning your spinal vertebrae which has several benefits.
Pain relief, improved flexibility, improved posture, prevention of spinal degenerative arthritis and most importantly to ensure that all parts of your body receive a proper and healthy nerve supply.
There is no other profession that can do this.
Chiropractors can also re-align your larger skeletal joints such as your shoulders, hips and knees for example if need be.
As you can see, each of these practises has its own unique benefits and one does not replace another.
And it is not uncommon for some patients to require massage or physio concurrently with chiropractic care depending upon their particular circumstance.

This week I would like to address the issue of xrays as many of you have asked if xrays are actually necessary before starting chiropractic care.
And this really depends upon the chiropractor that you go to, but the first issue I would like to address is that of radiation as some of you have expressed concerns about this.
The fact is with advancements in xray technology, all xrays are a lot safer than they used to be and you can actually catch more radiation from flying in airplanes than you can from an occasional spinal xray.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/11.27.2014.xrays.for.chiropractic.care.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/xrays.and_.chiropractic.care_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]Here are the important things for you to understand. There are 4 reasons why a chiropractor will request an xray before commencing treatment.
1) to see how much degenerative arthritis you have in your spine, 2) to locate the areas of the primary spinal misalignments/subluxations, 3) to determine what is required to correct any postural distortions, 4) for your safety because there are some conditions that do and will require a medical referral.
If you go to a chiropractor that uses a soft-tissue or physiotherapy approach, then these typically do not request xrays.
In my view however, the information that you get from a good set of spinal xrays far outweighs the risk of the slight amount of radiation that you would receive.
And of course, we do not xray anyone under 13 years of age unless there is a serious problem.

Sometimes I will hear people remark …”once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going for the rest of your life”.
And when I am asked if this is indeed true, my answer is this … “ No. You would go for only as long as you would want to stay healthy.”
And this is what I would like to clarify for you today.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/11.18.2014.length.of.chiropractic.care.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/length.of_.chiropractic.care_.jpg width=500 height=305 /]Remember that it is ultimately your choice whether you go to a chiropractor and for how long.
But the thing is, when you understand what chiropractic is all about, there is no way you would ever not want to go.
And this all depends upon the chiropractor that you go to.
Some will take the time to sit down with you and educate about what chiropractic is and the benefits that it can provide for you and your family. And others simply don’t.
When we think about this logically however, if you are on an exercise program to maintain good physical fitness and you are very careful with what you eat to maintain a healthy weight, how long would you want to do these things for?
And it is certainly no different with chiropractic care. You would do these things for only as long as you would want to stay healthy.
The choice is always up to you.
If you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns that you may have or your family may have, all you need to do is give us a call or click on the link on our home page and send us an email.

Last time I answered your question … “what do chiropractors do?”
And we learned how traumas can cause spinal misalignments (subluxations) which can injure your nerves.
What chiropractors do to help injured nerves is something called a spinal adjustment.
[flashvideo file=http://lifechiropractic.s3.amazonaws.com/11.11.2014.spinal.adjustment.bi-1.m4v image=https://lifechiropracticcentre.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/spinal.adjustment.jpg width=500 height=305 /]You need to know that this is something only chiropractors are trained to do and it is also why we get such unique results when no-one else can.
The question that I would like to answer today that some of you have is this … “is there another way to adjust my spine because I do not like to have my bones or my back
cracked ?”
First of all, chiropractors do not crack anything! When you think of cracking an egg for example, what happens? Well, it breaks. And I do not know of any chiropractor who would want to break your bones or your spine.
When you go to a chiropractor who does a manual hands-on type of adjustment you will often hear a noise that resembles a crack or a pop. But this has nothing to do with your bones or your vertebrae.
And this is what I would like to explain today because it is very important that you understand this.
This noise either come from nitrogen gas being released in the joint around the vertebra that is being re-aligned or from a slight stretching of scar tissue (adhesions) in the muscles and ligaments surrounding the vertebra that is being adjusted or both. Neither of these are detrimental to your health and well-being.
There are several methods of chiropractic adjusting techniques available to you if you do not like the manual approach. Some use a hand-held instrument called an activator, others employ posture blocks and others use more of a soft-tissue approach or pressure points.
None of these will create any noises and they will all serve to help you with your pinched nerves.
So, all you need to do is talk to your chiropractor or find someone who uses a technique that your prefer if the manual type of adjustment is not for you.
Please visit us again next time as I will answer more of your questions, but in the meantime if you have any questions on this topic or any other health concerns that you may have or your family may have, all you need to do is give us a call.
